French Onion Burger Tastes like a Beef Burger with Onion Soup!
This
French Onion Burger
tastes like a good onion soup on top of beef. Full of flavor and texture, serve this burgerfor a casual dinner party or any day of the week. I love it with Pommes Frittes (French Fries)
French Onion Burger
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
Patties
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 pound lean ground beef
1 egg
1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
1/2 envelope dry onion soup mix
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
2 tablespoons canola oil (divided)
4 slices gruyere cheese (about 8 ounces)
Dijon mustard
4 Kaiser rolls, split open
Gravy
2 tablespoosn butter
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon thyme
Freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons sherry or red wine
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon flour
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, mix together the beef, egg, breadcrumbs, onion soup mix, pepper and parsley. Form into 4 balls and flatten into oval patties. Place an indentation in the center of each patty. Let sit for a few minutes while you cook the onions.
Saute the onions in 1 tablespoon oil over medium low heat for about 10 minutes or opaque. Stir to be sure not to let brown. Add to the pan the butter, beef broth, thyme, freshly ground black pepper and sherry and simmer for about 20 minutes.
Pan fry burgers in another pan with 1 tablespoon oil on medium high heat for about 3 minutes each side. Top with cheese and remove once cheese has melted.
Increase gravy pan heat to medium high. Mix water and flour together and mix until not clumpy. Make sure this is well mixed prior to adding to hot broth. Slowly wisk in the water/flour mixture in to the hot broth mixture and continue to wisk in until sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
Lightly toast rolls.
Spread Dijon mustard on top side of each inside face of rolls. Place burgers in bun, top with onions and gravy.
